Cordless phones ae a lot smaller these days.

These  damaged handy small carts were purchased from the US Post office. Later on the post office said they didn't sell them  or should not have sold them and that we should not have them and repossed them. It is a long story. Call me and I will tell you about it.

102

We bought the back cover of the Houston Yellow pages. These billboards were put up to get consumers to check out that ad which had color photos, maps, prices and locations.

There is a lot of room here to fill this store up with  wallpaper.

103

We sold a lot of wallpaper paste.  Kerry posts a date sign here showing a water leak that we were  constantly plagued with at the super store on Katy Freeway at the 610 Loop.

The check out are in the super store on Katy Freeway at the 610 Loop had the check out area in the middle of the store. .
104

The ends of the aisle were utilize display space to show what some of the Wallpaper patterns were located on the at aisle

Our extensive inventory was "Overwhelming" to many customers so we used the word to motivate customers to come in and see what  was so overwhellimg about our store as it said on the billboadd.
105
We used the 7480 Harwin store  sign to send customers to the new larger store on Hempstead Highway. The sign also indicated that there was a free map that they could pick up in a box at the front door.

We has a lot ofroom for parking and parking lot sales at the 12922 Hempstead store. It was  a  45,000 square feet store. We then changed the name to Wallpaper World. See picture 12
106
We had extensvie stock on some patterns. Small motels that redecorated with our wallpaper needed a large quantity of  one particular pattern that meets with the furnishings in all the rooms.

6 employees at the 7480 Harwin store pose for a group picture at Meredith's birthday party in the stage area where video tape recordings were made. For many years I also did videotaping, editing, duplicating and foreign video conversions as additional income.
107
At the 120,000 square foot super store we had an abundance of space. Unfortunately the owner got ripped off from a bad roofing repair contractor and we had significant leaks eventually causing us to move all the stock out to 5 other new store in 60 days.

Up  close this sign reads clearly but from a driving distance it has way too much copy.  I bought  hundreds of these excess billboards at a very low price because the owner did not have them all leased.

108
Because of new equipment  we could do foreign video conversions for Pal. Secam,NTSC,  Beta 1, Beta 2 and Beta 3 formats.

Our 7480 Harwin store was built rather high above the ground but required that you go up 6 steps. For handicapped customers this was a problem. We occasionally had to help lift a wheel chair up the steps. New laws  now require ramps to be built. .

109
Daniel Bierman always had a good smile when greeting customers or me.  We had 3 scales in  this check out area which was right next to the front door. Note the sign in the back that describes our policy that all sales are final. Each customer had to sign a receipt saying the same thing. Selling by the pound we gave the customer every opportunity to  cut out any defects and only pay for what was put on the scale.

This is one of my favorite pictures because it  shows all my kids. Meredith, Amber and Avery each taking care of different  customers. We tried not to keep customers waing too long but  you can show have so many  employees on the payroll at one time.  One big fear is being at the store on Saturday our busiest day by yourself as all other employees were off. It did not happen too often.

110
We carried various surplus items which were most often locarted near the customer check out area at the Harwin store.

This blue draped stage at the Harwin store was used for recording Videotapes for our side business "Quck Video Taping Co. "
111
There were a few occasions where the pyramid system of tubes  broke loose. We prevented this by using U staples to tie the tubes together.

One of the reasons for going to the 45,000 square ft store was that  we had only  14,500 square feet here. We could not add any more stock.  We added lights to this warehouse several times. Initially it was so dark we handed customers a flashlight to better see what they were buying.
112

In addition to the large sign on the front of the store we had a very long large sign only visible to eastbound drivers on Hempstead Road.

Meredith sits at my desk where I did a lot of video editing and foreign video conversions as well as duplications. I could make 20 copies at one time.

The purpose here was to remind customer that they were looking at a billboard and should memorize briefly what it was trying to sell them.

Ron  Diaz checks the inventory while speaking on the cordless phone. Ron was bilingual with Spanish and was a big help with customers from Mexico.

114
We attached baskets to the  shelves for  border patterns. A sample of the border was wrapped around the outside of the basket which sat in a specially cut tube that was mounted to the shelf.  We had a million yards of border in stock.  We sold it at $ 1/yard.

At the 12922 Hempstead store we had shopping cards for the customers.  The checkout area was near the front door.  Avery and Meredith are taking care of customers.
115
The Hempstead store initially was set up with storage tube pyramids. Later we found a source for free plywood if we took these big crates apart.  We built very sturdy shelves with 8x16 contcrete blocks and plywood as shown on the right photo.

These shelves were multipurpose of being used for surplus other than wallpaper. they replaced the tube pyramids show in the photo on the left.

116
It is time for pizza for the employees at the Hempstead store. This was in a room enroute to my  office.

The plywood concrete  block shelves  were very sturdy and would hold  surplus  products other than wallpaper. We used the computer to print the large lettered signs.

117
Al came as a regualr temporary worker and got a lot of structural projects completed.  He seldom complained.

I kept and still have a lot of copies of all my video projects. Some day I will find time to get them converted to DVDs.
118
Tubes, Tubes and more tubes of wallpaper at  12922 Hempstead.

We bought large quantities of the laundry baskets from a wholesaler on Harwin. They were used to hold border as you can see in picture 114 and 121 .

119
The stock is being moved from one store to the other via   40 ft trailer. The orange rolls are some form of fabric.

When we moved into the Hempstead store we had 20 to 30 temporary employees who helped unload these trucks.
120
When the Olympic Torch was going through Houston they asked us if they could used our parking lto as a staging area..

This 16 ft trailer was used for advertising. until the trailer was stolen even thought it was locked to something. We had a supplier with a lot of offiice furniture that we sold on a consignment basis.
121
We had many a sidewalk sale  here to draw attention to new customers. It wasn't all that effective.

Most of what you see here is the large quantites of border we had to sell..
